feedback on these forums and this site?

Remo's picture

What are your thoughts regarding these online forums? Any and all feedback, good and bad, is useful. What do you think about the way they are setup into the two main sections for 1) Community Organisations and 2) East Coast skatepark forums? Do you feel that these will be useful at all in helping create a community voice for the area's skateparks? Does it need better instructions, or is it easy enough to jump in and start using? What about ideas for site images, site resources, and so on? Is this site even worth officially creating as "sk8tairawhiti.org" or "sk8tairawhiti.org.nz"? I'll be happy to do so, if it seems worth it. Thanks for trying the system out, and for your feedback.

Cheers!

Request for RSS/e-mail on changes

Hey, AnDy, that's a great idea!

I believe that some of the RSS "syndication" symbols (the orange symbol looking sortof like radio signals being broadcast) that you see around at the bottom of the pages can be used to obtain alerts when anything has been updated, but I have not yet tested this. I agree that it would be great to get an e-mail for any such changes, and I imagine that there are RSS e-mail tools, but don't yet know what they are. I will begin exploring ways to either use the existing RSS capabilities, and/or to automatically generate e-mails directly. In the meantime, though, do have a little play with the RSS :-)

Thanks for thinking of ways to make this forum more usable. I am hoping to announce it to "the world" at next week's ramp opening, so I will do hope to do anything that I can do to make it as usable as possible before then. Cheers!

Request for User Image Galleries

In addition to the current ability to include images within postings,... Wouldn't it be cool to have personal image galleries for each user? Until then, though, remember that whenever you want to include an image in your posting, you can upload the image as an attachment, or you can link-to or embed images on image-hosting sites such as Flickr, PhotoBucket, Picasa, or even link-to/embed photos that are in your Bebo or MySpace galleries.

Request for Images and Avatars

As per Grant's request, the site should allow for the addition/inclusion of images, as well as user-profile avatars images to represent the user in their forum postings).

User Profiles and Avatars added

I have added support for additional user information within the user profiles, including the ability to upload avatar images. It seems that the avatar does not automatically apply to any previous postings, but I am hoping that it will show for this posting :-)

Cool, avatars ARE displayed!

Cool, avatars ARE displayed (and correction to the above, it DOES automatically show on all previous postings). To setup your own avatar, simply edit your profile under My Account and upload your desired avatar image.

Also testing the new capability to attach files by uploading an image for the Lee Ralph Maori Warrior deck. Without doing anything special with the image attachment, it SHOULD simply appears as follows.... Unfortunately, it seems that images and other files can only be added in a brand-new posting. Ideally, there will be a way to add images to ANY comment or reply in a thread.

Embedding Images within Comments

Although images and other files can only be uploaded during a post, you can ALWAYS embed an image that you have previously uploaded, whether onto this sk8tairawhiti site, or to some other hosted location on the web, such as the following image on PhotoBucket:

Photobucket

Ignoring for a moment that the above also links you to the PhotoBucket album, the above image was embedded very simply by typing the following HTML into the comment, giving the source of the corresponding PhotoBucket image:

<img src="http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x161/r3m0sk8/Sk8SoCal2007/DSCF3658.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

(and, by the way... there has GOT to be some other way to upload files onto THIS site at any other time, though)

Embedding movies

The same concept applies to embedding web-hosted videos as well, as shown in the following PhotoBucket-hosted little silent skate vid:

Here is the HTML code used to embed the above:

<embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i185.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid185.photobucket.com/albums/x161/r3m0sk8/Sk8SoCal2007/DSCF3659.flv">

For something a little more local, though, and with sounds, howzabout this little snippet of sesh from Kaiti bowl (October 2007):

Which was embedded with the following HTML code:

<embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i185.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid185.photobucket.com/albums/x161/r3m0sk8/Sk8GisborneOctober2007/MVI_0859.flv">

Remember that these bits of HTML code are usually automatically generated for you by the respective web-host (in this case, PhotoBucket), and all you really need to do is copy & paste the HTML Embedding code that they provide with your desired image or movie. Super easy.
