From the GDC's December 2007 newsletter, Town and Country Matters, issue no 48:
Elgin youth to benefit
"Elgin community groups are seeking improved facilities at the Blackpool Reserve behind the Whare Wananga to give their young people more to do. Community facilities asset manager Terry McMillan says Elgin has enjoyed a resurgence of community spirit in the past few years with active involvement from E Tu Elgin, Cobham School and Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa.
...
The community has a high percentage of young people and is calling for a basketball court and skate park and more plantings including flax. With the LTCCP coming up early next year, communities need to think about the projects they would like to work towards with Council.”
So, with both a new Elgin skatepark (at Blackpool) and the overall GDC LTCCP (Long-Term Council Community Plan) coming up for review, NOW is the time for ANYBODY and EVERYBODY interested in Gisborne's skateparks to begin thinking about what kind of new facilities might benefit the community. Do you want just another copy of the same spine set that is currently in Gisborne's Alfred Cox town park as well as Tolaga Bay's skatepark? Maybe an improvement on it? For example, some have requested smaller spines for beginners, and some would like to see rounded & bowled-in "corners" to allow for more flow. Or perhaps you would like something entirely different, perhaps another bowl, a snake run, and more street facilities. And remember that these are not "either"/"or" issues, as we can provide recommendations which include a variety of elements.
To provide a best overall plan for Elgin and Gisborne's skateparks in general, it would be best to consider Elgin not as yet another isolated park, but as an integrated part of our skateparks community as a whole. What are we currently missing, and what do we need in Gisborne? Try to think not only of skateboarders, but of features that could benefit all possible park users (bikes and all), and all ages and skill levels. And to spark some ideas of thinking even bigger and longer-term, also consider what possible new features might be of interest for the town park, for Kaiti, and for possible "satellite spots" around town including little urban street spots (such as little one-off aesthetically interesting structures to grind along a bicycle paths, etc.) or even a series of little "beach bowls" near some of the local surf spots. The possibilities really are endless, and it's just up to US as the community of interested skateparks users, to provide a voice and vision to the Gisborne District Council and any possible funding groups.
Please join in and share your vision of Gisborne's skateparks here.
Cheers!

Elgin skate park
yeah, something different to Kaiti and Alfred Cox parks would be good.
something really different. Remo you have recently been on tour in the states.
What would be different to the ones we already have here, and are skateable by groms and Old Man Army types?
anyone have any ideas?
Elgin skate park
I think you've hit on the key to finding some good ideas for Elgin, Brutus! That is, something that is different to what we already have here, and is skateable from a wide variety of ages/styles/interests/etc. As soon as we can begin putting images in here, it'll be nice to show sample possibilities from the states AND from other parts of New Zealand. In the meantime, I would highly encourage everybody to really think outside of the box or the square or whatever it is. Look through as many skate magazines and skate videos as possible with the idea of finding new skate possibilities for us. Look through online sites such as www.frontsidegrind.co.nz, www.concretedisciples.com, or www.018.co.nz. All good! :-)

new Patutahi Ramp
As a related sidenote to the Gisborne area skateparks, apparently the Tolaga Bay ramp will be re-skinned (new surface of ply) and relocated to Patutahi.

Patutahi Ramp
Tena Koutu,
The Patutahi Community is having a Whanau day on
Saturday the 4th of October From 3pm.
To celebrate the new ramp there.
It is the old half pipe from Tolaga Bay and has been resurfaced with Skatelite.
It is a family day, so there will be games and events for the whole whanau as well as the focus on the new ramp.
Get out there and show the Patutahi community what they have been missing out on.
If this all goes well this could lead to a permant concrete skate park out there too.
Patutahi Ramp Opening was good fun!
Thanks to all of you who showed up at the ramp opening - what a great day! Special thanks to Serenity Island and the GDC for heaps of great prizes (including a one of a kind custom "GDC deck", Chaos style!) and skate demos; to Luka and his folx for the autographed copy of his book and a truly inspiring skate demo; and to Arn from Mahia for the special last-minute addition to the skate demos (2001 Space Odyssey style!). Great skating everybody for a fun demonstration of the ramp's possibilities! Keep an eye on those Patutahi skaters - I think we're gonna have some seriously good rippers out there if they keep at it.

Bikes at Patutahi Ramp
Bikes will be welcome to ride the new Patutahi ramp, as long as any bike-pegs are covered to protect the ramp. So, in addition to the skateboarding demos that will happen at the Patutahi Ramp Opening, it would be nice to show a few bike demos, and to demonstrate proper peg covers, etc. If you know of any bikers who might be interested in participating during the opening day ceremonies, please encourage them to head on out for the day. Cheers!

separate Patutahi forum?
Thanks for posting that, G to the Mac! Let's all get out there and have a great ramp opening - it's not often that new facilities come along for us to enjoy.
How do you each feel about keeping the Patutahi discussions here within the Gisborne Skateparks forum? It's a bit further out of town and could be worth creating its own Patutahi forum, but maybe it's not all that far? All depends on whether you have a vehicle, I suppose. ;-)
